Gorgeous Summer Soap Making to Inspire!

Over here at Cibaria Soap Supply, we really really love the summer! And in our neck of the woods, summer has sure taken it’s sweet time to get here! Even in otherwise “Sunny” Southern California, we’ve experience long months of rainy / gloomy weather in what is otherwise known as the hottest time of the year for us! Just as of a week or two ago has the weather started to warm up to it’s normal mid-90′s temps and the gloomy and rainy days have hopefully shown the last of themselves.

To celebrate summer’s triumphant arrival, we’ve compiled a showcase of some of our favorite Summer-Inspired Soaps! As you can see, they range quite a bit in method, scent, shape, and color. We wanted to try to include as many soap making methods as possible, and hopefully we were successful in doing this!

This oh-so-cute creation was crafted by Lily Bay Soap, which doesn’t seem to have a working Etsy page at this time. If anyone knows where this person currently sells, please let us know, and we’ll link their store!

SUPER Cute Watermelon Soap Bars – and they smell like watermelon too! Crafted by Sweet Body Soaps

Words can’t describe how we feel about this soap! It’s just all-around impressive! Besides looking like a deliciously edible treat, this soap features bright colors, and fruit molded shapes on top! We’re not sure how they achieved this look, but it’s great! Crafted by Alegria Mediterraneo Soap

A Basic Soap Making Recipe

Ever wondered how you could get started making soap, without getting into something to difficult? This is a wonderful recipe for beginners, and it really gives you a feel for basic soap making

This is a great soap making recipe for beginners from this source.

Ingredients:

6.5 oz. palm oil
6.5 oz. coconut oil
7.5 oz. olive oil
1.3 oz. castor oil
8 oz. water
3.1 oz. lye
1 oz. of fragrance oil or essential oil blend

Preparation:

Mix your lye solution first and set it aside to cool. Measure and heat your solid oils until completely melted. Measure and add the liquid oils to the melted solid oils. When both the lye and the oils are at about 100-110 degrees, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Stir with a stick blender, alternating short blasts with the blender and stirring. Mix the soap until it reaches a light trace. Add the fragrance oil. Mix them into the soap thoroughly. Pour the raw soap into your mold and let it sit for 12-24 hours until it has cooled off completely and is hard enough to cut. Remove it from the mold and slice into bars. Let it cure an additional 2-4 weeks.

With the biggest gift-giving day for lovers creeping up on us, we’re reminded that Spring Mother’s Day, and Easter are really not too far off.

Soap Making Soap Supply Essentials

Since I have yet to make my first soap, (yes, it’s been very busy around here), I am still exploring the wide world of Soap Making Supplies and accessories. So far, I know that you need fragrance oils, Carrier Oils, lye, coloring, and molds. I’ve seen all kinds of other things like mica and even soap add-ins like flowers, loofahs, and coffee beans.

In the short time that I’ve been learning about soap, I’ve seen some absolutely amazing creations. Many people are making layered soaps with swirls, some are making layered soaps with top layers that are clear and glittery. Some soaps are made for specifically for the eco-conscious. Others just leave me amazed and hungry, due to their striking resemblance to food.

I’ve seen some of the photos that you all post online that show your extensive shelves of soap making supplies and materials, and it’s truly baffling! Most of you gals (and guys!) have a LOT of stuff! I never knew soapmaking was such an ‘extreme’ craft, but apparently it’s overtaken many kitchens, spare rooms, and even garages.

This leads me to the question of the day: What Soap Supplies can you NOT live without?

A Soap Makers Guide to Holiday Survival

With the Holidays quickly approaching, we’re seeing more and more of an urgent rush in our soap maker friends than ever before. After months of speculation, soapers are gearing up for what they’re hoping will be a more promising Holiday season than the last few years have proven to be. We’re hearing tales of new soap creations, first-time experiments, and even gaining some insight on what you’re customers are requesting in terms of type of soap, scent, and style/feel.

With so much going on, it’s easy to get overwhelmed or even feel discouraged at the thought of sky high unemployment rates and a still sub-par economy.

We’ve developed some awesome tips to help our Soap Maker friends survive the Holidays in one piece! Without further ado, here they are!

- Get Organized: If you’re not naturally an organized person, try to resolve to get organized before the New year arrives. Organize everything. Ingredients, recipes, Fragrances, packaging, labels… all of it! If you’re currently organized, take a good look at your ‘system’. Is it working for you? Can it be improved? Utilize online note-taking and organization tools such as Evernote, Google Calendar, and your Outlook Calendar.

-Take Notes: Are you getting various requests for certain soaps at Fairs or trade shows? Are friends or friends of friends asking about certain types of soaps and scents? Take notes, and keep track of what you’re being asked for and what’s selling for your retailers or customers! Keeping mental notes easily makes way for details to slip through the cracks. There’s something about seeing raw numbers in front of you that helps you decide what to make, what will sell, and where to allocate your ingredient budget. Think numbers and pie charts.

- Watch Your Competition: Some of your competitors may be pros at preparing for the Holidays. Keep an eye on what they’re doing! Do they change their packaging for the Holidays? Do they modify their website? Do they send out special newsletters or conduct contests? If they’ve been in the game a long time, chances are they know exactly what will work and what will waste effort. Be sure to document your findings in a special place like a dedicated notebook, excel file, or PDA note-taking app.
- Preparation is Key: Try to plan out your stock a few months in advance, and get all of your regular holiday soap making done as early a you can. On-the-fly orders are sure to come, and you won’t want to have to turn down additional business because you weren’t prepared. Take notes of what you’ve done this year, and see how it all works out. When the next holiday season rolls around, you’ll be able to take a look back, and fine-tune your Holiday practices.

- Learn Where Your time Is Going: Have you ever gone through a day and noticed that you didn’t get done nearly as much as you wanted to? We’ve all wished we could learn to better manage our time. Learning to prioritize is somewhat of an art form that everyone struggles with. We highly recommend reading “Getting Things Done” By David Allen. This book is an amazing guide to help you get things done in an organized, and pain-free fashion!
